Long Term Causes of World War I
One of the long term causes of World War I was Nationalism. The French first began to spread nationalism during the French Revolution, and the idea of nationalism soon swept through all of Europe. Nationalism was the idea that people with the same origins ethnically, in language, and political views and the nationalists desired the
formation of sovereign states. This began to dominate all of Europe and created multiple nationalistic movements in places such as Belgium as they gained independence from the Netherlands, in Italy as they created unification, as well as Germany and the unification there also. But nationalism still ended up unresolved in some areas of Europe including Eastern Europe and the Balkans.
Ottoman territories were unable to resist the nationalist forces
and Austria-Hungary confronted the nationalist wants of the Slavic People-Slovenes, Croats, Serbs, Slovaks, Czechs, and Poles. When other countries began to be involved in supporting these people, international conflict began.
Militarism was a large race of arms between the large industrial companies in Germany, France, and Britain. Lots and lots of money was funded to create new technologies and war arsenals. People thought that “The bigger the army, the stronger the country. The stronger the country, the more astute they were.” The bigger the military, the more damage they could do and the more devastation they could cause. It affected population, cities, and land in the areas.
Another contribution to the Great War was alliances made between countries. There were three main alliances before the war. The Triple Entente included Russia, Finland, France, The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland, and Poland. The Allies of Triple Entente were Italy, Portugal, Greece, Sardinia, Montenegro, Serbia, and Romania. The Central Powers included Germany, Austria-Hungary, Bulgaria, and the Ottoman Empire. Over time the Triple Entente became the Allied Powers which included Russia, France, the United States, Japan, Serbia and the United Kingdom.
Imperialism also contributed to the Great War. When a larger country went to a different part of the world and colonized the area, they imperialized it. There they could manufacture goods and then send them back to the main country for very cheap. It began with Britain and France, but Germany and Italy also wanted to start colonizing. Wars began because of the fighting
over who would get the territory.
